Miss Wisconsin Latina

Francis Castro, a proud Hispanic, is Beloit's first Latina to represent Wisconsin in the Miss Wisconsin Latina competition. Congratulations to Francis! La Voz de Beloit wishes you victory. Francis sends us the message of her platform:
"I am so happy to be able to share the news that I am the new and first Miss Wisconsin Latina! It has always been important to me to preserve our language, young Latinos, we can use our language to help others. If we did not speak Spanish, we would not be able to help those people who do not yet speak English or who do not speak it.
I think it is very important to be able to conserve Spanish in order to communicate with our family members and members of our community who do not speak English.
I believe that our language should be preserved, we have to try to teach our little ones that Spanish is just as important as English, and we do not have to be afraid to speak our language.
I know that sometimes we face racism and discrimination when we speak Spanish outside the home, but it is important to remember that speaking other languages is not illegal and we do not have to let those people instill in us that we should not speak Spanish; on the contrary, we must educate them and let them know that being bilingual is not only beautiful but much better for health. It has many benefits for mental health as well as obviously the opportunity to communicate with many more people than a person who is only monolingual.
I am so excited for the opportunity to go to Florida this July representing Wisconsin to compete with the other states, which have smart and strong Latinas as their representatives. I am currently making face masks to raise funds for this trip. I am also making free face masks for our clinics and hospitals with a group called Wisconsin Face Mask Warriors.
